Beeswax vs. Candelilla Wax. Which is Better?

Both Beeswax and Candelilla wax make excellent ingredients for a variety of hair and skincare products but which one is right for you? Read on to learn more about their benefits so you can decide which best suits your needs.

Beeswax

Beeswax remains one of the best skincare ingredients you can buy for a number of reasons:

  • Like Candelilla wax, beeswax contains lots of vitamin A which allows healthy skin cells to regenerate

  • Adding beeswax to your formula will increase its thickness, since it has a higher melting point and remains solid at room temperature

  • It has humectant characteristics and draws moisture to the skin

  • The “breathable” barrier it provides seals in moisture and helps ward off environmental irritants and toxins, making it perfect for tattoo aftercare products

  • Beeswax has a pleasant and mild, honey-like scent

While beeswax is an excellent choice for most, you should find other alternatives if you are allergic to honey or pollen or are looking for vegan products. Bayberry Wax, Sunflower Wax, Carnauba Wax, and Candelilla Wax are all great vegan options.

Candelilla Wax

Candelilla wax is extracted from Candelilla Shrub leaves and is a great alternative to beeswax for the following reasons:

  • Like beeswax, Candelilla wax contains lots of vitamin A which allows healthy skin cells to regenerate

  • Candelilla wax is a vegan alternative to beeswax and can be substituted into many hair and skincare formulas

  • It has a high melting point and can function in the form of an emulsifier or stabilizer in lotions, creams, and salves

  • It absorbs fairly easily into the skin

  • When substituting in place of beeswax, you only need half the amount to gain similar results

  • It is scent-free

While Candelilla wax is also an excellent option, it may not be the best for you. Be sure to weigh out the pros and cons of each type of wax before making your choice. Please contact us if you’d like more information on vegan product availability and pricing.
